By Jack A. Murphy, Photography by Ken E. Erickson

Explore Denver's history through the handsome stones used to build the city's landmarks.

The Brown Palace Hotel at 17th Street and Broadway, a grand sandstone structure, is one of Colorado's most famous historic buildings. Constructed between 1890 and 1892, its unique triangular design brought architect Frank E. Edbrooke considerable acclaim. An illustration of the hotel appeared on the front cover of the May 21, 1892, issue of Scientific American, accompanied by an article praising the hotel's many modern aspects.
